About the lecture:
Non-mechanistic Perspective of Geotechnical Engineering

Engineers deal mostly with ‘materials’ which have unique and specific properties. Entities could be somewhat like living beings and do not necessarily possess unique properties. Instead they exhibit behavioral responses to stimuli. Clays and sands can exist in states ranging from liquid to solid and loosest to densest respectively. Similarly the state in which ground can exist is often quantified though the over-consolidation ratio. Responses of soils in general and the ground in particular are examined and analyzed under different test and design conditions. The most commonly used parameter, the undrained strength, is shear test sensitive. The premise and the conclusion of the seminar is that geotechnical engineering should be viewed comprehensively and beyond a simplistic mechanistic view.

About the speaker:
Prof. M.R.Madhav, Professor Emeritus, J.N.T.U, Hyderabad, Vice President for Asia, International Society of Soil Mechanics & Geotechnical Engineering, and Advisor/Consultant, Energy Infratech, Navi Mumbai SEZ, Central Road Research Institute, New Delhi, retired as Professor of Civil Engineering, IIT, Kanpur, after thirty-six years of glorious service. He graduated in Civil Engineering from Andhra University in 1960, obtained the Master of Engineering and the Doctorate of Philosophy degrees from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in the years 1961 and 1967 respectively. Prof. Madhav also worked at several universities abroad (University of Sydney, Australia; Concordia University, Canada, Saga University, Saga; University of Ghent, Belgium, Queen’s University, Belfast, Kansas State Univ, Manhattan, USA, etc.). He was an Associate at the International Center for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy.

Prof. Madhav’s research interests span the whole gamut of Geotechnical Engineering. Currently he is actively pursuing research of reinforcement sheet – soil interactions and the response of ground to various types of improvement techniques especially for earthquake disaster mitigation. He guided more than 20 doctoral and several master’s theses and final year projects. He co-edited a book entitled ‘LOWLANDS – DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT’ and authored more than 350 publications in refereed international and national journals and conferences.

Prof Madhav is well known internationally and is a well recognized teacher and researcher. He established a school of research at IIT, Kanpur, in Geotechnical Engineering and his work on Modelling and Numerical Analyses of Geotechnical and Ground Engineering Problems is monumental. He worked in several fields over a period spanning more than four decades at some of the leading and premier Institutions in India and abroad. His work is cited in several publications. He has contributed to the Practice of Geotechnical Engineering as a consultant and to the Indian Geotechnical Society for several years as a Member of the Executive Committee, as a Reviewer for and Editor of the Indian Geotechnical Journal and as President.

Prof. Madhav delivered Keynote/Plenary Lectures, Chaired Technical Sessions in several International and National Conferences, was a Panelist in the XIII, XV and XVI International Conferences on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering at New Delhi (1994), Istanbul (2001) and Osaka (2005). He delivered the prestigious Annual Lecture of the IGS and a Keynote Lecture at the recent 12th Asian Regional Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering at Singapore. He is elected as a Life Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, the Indian Geotechnical Society, The Institution of Engineers (India), etc. and was awarded the Keucklemann Award of the IGS, the Prof. Mehra Research Award of the University of Roorkee, Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary Research Award of CBIP, the Doctor of Science degree of the Indian Institute of Science, Distinction in Engineering Technology from the Central Board of Irrigation and Power, IGS – Prof. Dinesh Mohan Prize, etc. He was the President of the Indian Geotechnical Society, and is currently the Vice President for Asia of IS SM & GE, and of the International Association of Lowland Technology, and Chairman, Publications Committee, Indian National Academy of Engineering. He has been awarded the Honorary Fellowship in 2003 and Diamond Jubilee Honour in 2008 by IGS in recognition of his contributions to the field of Geotechnical Engineering and for his services to the Indian Geotechnical Society. Most recently, he was awarded the prestigious Bharat Ratna M Visweswaraya Award by Government of AP & Institution of Engineers (I) AP State Centre.
