IGS Mumbai History

The Beginning

In 1975, Prof. R. K. Katti of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, was requested to commence activities in Bombay as a local chapter. Prof. Katti got in touch with several organisations of Bombay, including the Bombay Port Trust, the Indian Railways, Municipal Corporation of Greater Bombay, Asia Foundation and Construction Limited, Cementation Company Limited and Associated Instruments Manufacturing India Limited. Thus, the Bombay Chapter was born.

Operations

The society was run from the premises of Institution of Engineers (India), Maharashtra Centre at Haji Ali. The initial finances of the Chapter came from the surplus balance of the IGS Conference held in Bombay in 1970 at the IIT. Membership was open to all interested in and associated with Geotechnical activities.

Activities

Ever since, the Bombay Chapter has been renamed “Mumbai Chapter” after the identityof the metropolis of Bombay was changed to Mumbai. The Chapter has promoted Geotechnical Engineering all through by organisation of lectures and seminars by prominent local, national abd international authorities as well as by organising field visits to sites in and around Greater Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

Besides 1970, the Chapter has hosted the Indian Geotechnical Conferences of 1980, 1990 and 2000.

The organisation of the Mumbai Chapter is well structured and team spirit has been its hall mark. By virtue of concerted efforts of the Executive Committee, the Mumbai Chapter was awarded the “Best Chapter Award” in 1997.

Presently the Chapter boasts of a membership of 360 Looking forward, the Chapter resolves to better its past performance in the promotion of Geotechnical Engineering.

    IGS Mumbai chapter also got the best chapter award for the year 2000 which was given in Dec 2001 at Indore as my memory goes.
