Lecture Program by Prof. M. R. Madhav

Indian Geotechnical Society, Mumbai Chapter and Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, invite you on Thursday, January 7, 2010 for a lecture program on:

  • Non-mechanistic Perspective of Geotechnical Engineering
  • Kinematics and Ultimate Capacity of Foundations

at
Seminar Room, 1st Floor
Department of Civil Engineering
IIT Bombay, Powai, Mumbai – 400076

Programme:
3.45 pm to 4.00 pm – Registration
4.00 pm to 4.05 pm – Welcome
4.05 pm to 5.00 pm – Lecture 1
5.00 pm to 5.15 pm – Tea
5.15 pm to 6.15 pm – Lecture 2

About the lecture:
Non-mechanistic Perspective of Geotechnical Engineering

Engineers deal mostly with ‘materials’ which have unique and specific properties. Entities could be somewhat like living beings and do not necessarily possess unique properties. Instead they exhibit behavioral responses to stimuli. Clays and sands can exist in states ranging from liquid to solid and loosest to densest respectively. Similarly the state in which ground can exist is often quantified though the over-consolidation ratio. Responses of soils in general and the ground in particular are examined and analyzed under different test and design conditions. The most commonly used parameter, the undrained strength, is shear test sensitive. The premise and the conclusion of the seminar is that geotechnical engineering should be viewed comprehensively and beyond a simplistic mechanistic view.

About the speaker:
Prof. M.R.Madhav, Professor Emeritus, J.N.T.U, Hyderabad, Vice President for Asia, International Society of Soil Mechanics & Geotechnical Engineering, and Advisor/Consultant, Energy Infratech, Navi Mumbai SEZ, Central Road Research Institute, New Delhi, retired as Professor of Civil Engineering, IIT, Kanpur, after thirty-six years of glorious service. Lecture 1
GPR data contains signals that are presented usually in the form of wiggle traces and contain information which cannot be directly viewed as an image, which is amenable to visual interpretation. The data itself is highly sensitive to the prevailing ground conditions and the choice of parameters for collecting and recording the data is critical for acquiring quality data. A number of methods are available to process the data and interpret. This lecture will cover the fundamentals of GPR data collection and processing and present several case studies.

Lecture 2
The Seismic Investigation techniques are quite established and widely adopted in Oil Exploration Industry & Geotechnical Engineering fields. It is a highly potent methodology of investigations and the potential for shallow seismics is as yet quite untapped. This session would throw light on various methods of shallow seismic investigations like refraction, MSAW and borehole seismics. The techniques would be highlighted with relevant case studies and benefits accruing from these methods, when integrated with routine Geotechnical Investigations, would be presented.

    NEED FOR GEOTECHNICAL INSTRUMENTATION
The term geotechnical construction can be used for construction requiring consideration of the engineering properties of soil or rock. In the design of a surface facility, the ability of the ground to support the construction must be considered. In the design of subsurface facility, consideration must also be given to ability of the ground to support itself or be supported by other means. In both cases, the engineering properties of the soil or the rock are the factors of interest. The designer of the geotechnical construction works with a wide variety of naturally occurring heterogeneous materials, which may be altered to make them more suitable. But exact numerical values of their engineering properties cannot be assigned. Laboratory or field test may be performed on selected samples to obtain the values for engineering properties, but these tests only provide a range of possible values.
The design of geotechnical construction will be based on selecting the most probable values within the ranges of possible values for engineering properties. As construction progresses and geotechnical conditions are observed or behaviour are monitored, the design judgment can be evaluated and if necessary updated. Thus engineering observations during the geotechnical construction are integral part of design process, and geotechnical instrumentation is a tool to assist with these observations.
Following geotechnical instruments are going to be covered in the presentation:

  • Inclinometer
  • Tilt-meters
  • Strain Gauges
  • Piezometer
  • Liquid level settlement sensors
  • Vibration Monitors
  • Total Pressure cells
  • Load Cells
    SONIC DRILLING
Sonic drilling is the best and fastest drilling method for difficult drilling conditions. Following are the advantages of sonic drilling. Recovery of totally undisturbed core samples in solid and unconsolidated strata. Recovery rates exceed 95% in Overburden. Cores can be obtained from a wide variety of deposits including sands, soft clays, gravels, boulders, mine tailings, slag piles, etc. The holes drilled are extremely straight compared to any other method. No flushing media is required hence no contamination due to water and also no waste is generated.
Sonic Drilling will be advantageous in geotechnical investigations. The sample recovered is a core sample in highly representative state and windowless. SPT can be performed at regular intervals in a dry hole with automatic Hammer. Also for Environmental investigations, sonic can drill uncontaminated wells up to 300 mm diameters.
